WHAT IS AN IAS OFFICER?
The term IAS stands for Indian Administrative Services. It comes under the administrative domain of the All India Services. An IAS officer works for the Indian Bureaucratic system. It is one of the most prestigious and sought after professions in India. Some of the best minds attempt to become an IAS officer.
Numerous executive decisions taken by elected bodies of the government are finally executed and implemented lawfully and following proper protocol by the IAS officers and other allied services. Read more to know more about IAS officers.
HOW TO BECOME AN IAS OFFICER
Becoming an IAS Officer is demanding and a difficult task. Only a few who have the grit and undeterred determination are able to fulfill their dream of becoming an IAS Officer. We have seen many IAS aspirants from all walks of life and varying backgrounds qualifying the Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC every year. This exam is conducted to recruit civil servants for over 25 services including the IAS, IPS, IFS, Central government services and many other respected allied services.
There are three stages of this exam-
- Prelims – Two MCQ papers (General Studies, CSAT)
- Mains – Nine theory papers (Essay, Two Language, Four General Studies, and Two Optional Papers)
- Interview – Personality Test
WHAT ARE THE POWERS OF AN IAS OFFICER?
Owing to the wide range of responsibilities and critical decision making involved in this job, the Indian government grants the IAS officers with a lot of discretionary powers as well as privileges.
IAS OFFICERS POWERS AND DUTIES
IAS officers also bask in the glory of being at high social positions because of the high responsibility services they perform for our society. IAS officers are able to use their powers and privileges to bring a positive impact on a lot of people’s lives.
- An IAS Officer joins the state administration at the sub-divisional level and as a sub-divisional magistrate looks after general administration and development work as well as law and order in the areas under his/her control.
- The post of the District Officer variously known as District Magistrate, District Collector or Deputy Commissioner is the most esteemed and distinguishable post held by the members of the service.
- At the district level, IAS officers are mainly delegated with district affairs, including the implementation of developmental schemes.
- They actively play an important role in the State Secretariat or as Head of Departments or in Public Sector Undertakings.
- They supervise daily affairs of the government including forming and implementing policy after consulting the minister of the concerned ministry.
- They regularly travel to places where the policies are being implemented.
- They are held responsible and accountable for the expenditure of public funds on the implementation of policies.
- IAS officers make valuable contributions in the process of policy formulation and decision-making and the final shape before presenting it to the concerned ministry or the cabinet.
WHAT CAN AN IAS OFFICER DO FOR THE SOCIETY?
The role of an IAS officer in society depends on his/her posting and their respective department.
There are basically three types of assignments given to them:
- Field
- State Secretariat/Public Sector Undertakings
- Central Secretariat
Most of their work involves being an administrative incharge of their delegated district/area/department, policy formulation, policy implementation, heading PSUs, etc. IAS officers are also sent on missions abroad, or fulfil duties which come directly under the central government.
Occasionally, IAS officers are deputed in private organisations for short tenures.
